Fraud alert Money mule risk Protect your account

Beware of Becoming a Money Mule

“Easy money” offers can hide serious criminal activity. If someone asks to move money through your account, it can place you at legal and financial risk, even if you were misled.

What is a money mule?

A money mule is a person used by criminals to transfer stolen or illegal funds. The request might look like a job, a favour, or a quick gig, but using your account this way can be treated as money laundering.

How students get targeted

  • DMs or texts promising fast money for “processing payments”.
  • Job ads with no interview, no references, and vague duties.
  • Requests to receive funds and forward them to another account.
  • Pressure to act quickly and keep the arrangement secret.

Why it is serious

  • Potential criminal investigation, fines, or prosecution.
  • Bank account suspension or closure, and fraud markers.
  • Difficulty opening accounts or accessing financial services later.
  • Identity misuse if you share documents or account details.

What to do if approached

  • Say no immediately to any “money transfer” request through your account.
  • Keep records: screenshots, messages, phone numbers, and profiles.
  • Contact your bank or credit union and explain what happened.
  • Report suspicious activity to local authorities where appropriate.

Real employers do not ask you to receive and forward money through your personal account.
